Are there any design rules you follow?
I don’t think so! I have always liked whatever feels good! There are certain things I know make a space feel good for me; high ceilings, nice linen, plants and a mix of design items and sentimental items. A good color scheme can help in a more "cluttered" home.
Any secrets of capturing great images of our homes?
Good light! I dismissed this when I first started, but oh boy does it make all the difference!
What is essential to creating a personal sanctuary?
I just think plants are everything. A cascading, living, natural character in your place that inherently creates a symbiotic relationship between you and your space. Not only do they provide an aesthetic and emotional sanctuary but they increase airflow, productivity and health!
What drives your creativity?
This sounds like an annoying non-practical answer but it’s true... being creative! Ha. It’s the same as anything in life, though. The more you do it the more it comes. When you’re being creative everyday, whether it’s crafts or gardening or photographs or cooking -- the more you’re inspired, the more you start seeing the world in a creative way and thinking of creative ideas as you go about everyday life. Until I started Copper and Cross I had never been creative with my hands! Didn’t think I had a designer-esque bone in my body. Honestly. But one day I just felt an overwhelming urge to create something, something tangible, and that first day, first step, gave rise to the whole last two years of creative pursuits.
Tips for designing a nurturing home or space?
I like low things. Maybe a short person’s preference but I think it creates a comforting feeling. Lots of low couches, cushions, poufs, benches, beds. Nice lighting and plenty of comfortable blankets, throws and linen. I like candles too but am particular about scents. I don’t like when it overpowers the whole space or is sickly sweet. That was super important to me when we designed our (tin can)dle range.
Any design hacks you wanna share?
You don’t have to buy all your plants. You can go outside and get some cuttings and drape em around! Mix old and new things. Let as much natural light in as you can. Buy some paint or spray paint and decorate some vessels for plants or candles. Spend your money on the things that you LOVE, that you see and just feel that sick happy about. Or you get a crush on it and you think about it for DAYS after. BUY that thing. You never regret that one.
