Like Your Work, Love Your Hobby
You know how they always tell you growing up that you should do what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life? They lie. Throw all of that out of the window. For ten years, I did what I loved. Halfway through, I hated it. When I finally shut down my photography business, I felt like I had ripped out a part of my soul. I came to work in an office, crunching numbers and fixing problems all day long. It didn’t take me long to decide that I really liked my job (yes, I surprised myself) and loved the people I worked with. Slowly, I started to fall in love with photography again, this time as a hobby. And now, it is once again a part of my soul. But I am not forced to do it when I don’t want to or bend to a client’s will when they have no clue what they are talking about. So my best advice is to find something that you like that you can make lots of money doing. And then use that money to go and do what you truly love and enjoy it.
Nurture Your Physical and Mental Health
Buy and eat local. Always. And take time for yourself and your marriage. I try to remember that I was a woman before I was a wife and that I was a wife before I was a mother. You have to nurture all three of those women. In that order.
If you must err, do so on the side of audacity.
Buy all the books. Oh wait. No, don’t. Leave them for me. . .
There is no such thing as too many books.
Business Tip I Wish I’d Known
Have an exit strategy. Always have an exit strategy for whatever it is that you are doing.
